The first couple of work-in-progress shows at New Greenham Arts a few days ago went well. Which is a relief. The first time you perform a new show, you have no real idea as to what you're dealing with. Will it need a complete re-write or will it just need a few nuts and bolts tightening? There's no way of knowing with any certainty until it's been put in front of an audience.
Now that I've done so and discovered that it doesn't need a complete re-write, I can roll my sleeves up and get stuck in to the show. It's why I often do these work-in-progress shows in pairs - because it means I have a day without travel in which to tinker with the powerpoint... which currently stands at 629 slides. It's a time-consuming thing to tinker with. But in lots of ways this is the fun bit.
The remaining work-in-progress shows start tonight and tomorrow in Braintree... followed by Andover, Wolverhampton and Tring...

I've had a lot of emails, tweets and facebook messages asking me if the tour will contain material from the current TV series. It doesn't. If you like the series, I reckon you'll like the tour... but there's no crossover of material. (Of course, I might take stuff from the tour and use it in series 3... but that's a different matter.)
And then the tour proper kicks off a week on Friday...

I've never been able to post something like this without getting quite a few angry messages from people complaining that the tour doesn't go near them... so with apologies, I thought I'd leave a comment here to try and head them off at the pass, so to speak.
The short answer: I don't book venues, they book me. If I'm not playing somewhere it either means they didn't book the show or they tried and didn't have dates that worked or - in the case of Oxford and Glasgow - are venues run by a company called ATG that (in my opinion) charges punters way too much for booking fees etc.
Well said Sir...the tour must come within 20 miles of most people, so no complaining guys. Looking forward to Winchester....do we have a dress code? As we're front row, need to ensure you have the right view!!!! :)
@Alan Jerram: the only dress code is that you should be dressed. I find a naked front row off-putting. Also, I sometimes take a hot drink on stage with me, so, y'know, it involves risk.
As to the other issue - the tour doesn't come close to plenty of people... and I have no issue with people moaning. It's just that I'm not the man to moan to because I'm not responsible. People seem very keen on the idea that I have assessed their town and decided it's not worthy - as if I would turn down work based on some silly prejudice I don't possess! Like everyone else, I go where the work is!
Sadly no dates in the deep South West this time Dave. However, I wouldn't dream of moaning at you: it's these damned theatres thinking we only want to see Jethro or The Wurzles!

The tour is in the town near my village. Not good enough. Why not the village hall? They don't book gigs? Beside the point. There's always my living room...

Great show in Swindon last night. Re texting, my daughter's friend had a text from her mother telling her that her rabbit had died, followed by the letters 'lol'. (She thought she was sending lots of love!) :)
