Not on the air today...

Doc, originally uploaded by Dave Gorman.

For my birthday this year I got an ear infection. It's novel, I'll give it that... but it's not what I asked for.

It feels like someone is stabbing a knife in my ear drum and waggling it about a bit. It's felt like that for three days. It has given me toothache in a way that I don't really understand. It has left me deaf in my right ear and confused my sense of balance. But the cruelest trick is that the pain is ten times worse if I lie down. Which is making sleep tricky.

I've tried. But the pain wakes me between 2 and 3am each time and the only way of making it feel less than excruciating is to not lie down any more.

I'm 41. I've been lucky in terms of health - in my adult life I've only been to see my GP three times.

This was one of those times. He's prescribed antibiotics. I've never taken antibiotics before. Well, you have to go to the doctors to get them so I wouldn't, would I?

I've never missed work because of illness either. Today is the first time. I'm not doing the Absolute Radio show this morning. I'm gutted. It's not because I need a rest to help me recover, it's because I'm deaf in one ear, have lost my sense of balance and if I try to talk, every other word is a pain-led expletive because for some reason, moving my jaw makes it more painful again.

I'm gutted. I love my Sunday mornings on the wireless and if I'm going to miss one I'd at least like the luxury of a lie in. It seems I can't have that either. I have an illness that makes lying down more painful. Go me.

Anyway. I'm sorry we're not on the air. But I'm not just sorry. I'm also in excruciating pain.

I had an ear infection for the first time a few weeks ago so have complete sympathy for you. I spent the time having more painkillers than I probably would have, ibuprofen was what kept me sane. The antibiotics will work really quickly, you'll feel better really soon, you'll just have to talk twice as fast on your show next week.

I'd check to see if your teeth are okay and one of them isn't cracked, inflamed, or infected.

I had a splitting ear infection that was absolutely awful, Co-codamol and Ibuprofen were my life saver.

I was on anti-biotics because my ear looked infected, but it came back. Turned out it was a cracked tooth that was infected and needed extracting, it was the cause of the pain in the ear even though there wasn't much pain in my tooth.

Hope you are feeling better soon - I have had my fair share of ear infections and they are not pleasant. Keep it dry if you can and rest up!

Co-codamol is definitely the way forward. If we had earache at school back in the dark ages (I'm two years older than you), our teacher would make us warm our mittens on the radiator and then hold them onto the sore ear. It's very soothing even if it doesn't actually work as well as painkillers and antibiotics. And get some of those nasty bacteria laden yoghurt drinks for your tummy ;-)

Hope you feel better soon

After you flew back from Ireland to host the show that time, I think most of us have felt that we owe you one. Or about a hundred and one. Get well soon, Dave.

The time you wake up at night is connected to liver energy in Chinese medicine.

Hope you get well soon!

As for sleep, a cosy arm chair perhaps so that you can dose off without lying down?

Get well soon. Missed you on the radio this morning. I work in a gym, and your programme keeps me sane before I'm forced to put the dance music stations on!

Aw - I've had that - trying to sleep sat up then lying down whilst asleep then waking cos of pain - vicious circle. Hope you feel better soon. Miss you.

I've had surgery with no anesthetic in the past, and I would rather endure that again than a really bad ear infection - you have my sympathy, and I hope you feel better (and get some sleep) soon

I had a mate once with exactly that type of ear infection - lovely bloke... such a shame.

Hello Mr Gorman, hope you're feeling better now. Ear infections are terrible things - I used to get them a lot. Then I got one with Labyrinthitis - so lots of pain, plus constantly feeling like I was on a boat in a storm... Fun times!

Hope you're back with us on Sunday, but as one of the comments above says, we owe you lots.
